How much sleep children need by age

Children need much more sleep than adults, and it changes a lot as they grow. These are the widely used general guidelines (including naps for younger children):

  • Babies (4โ€“11 months): about 12โ€“15 hours
  • Toddlers (1โ€“2 years): about 11โ€“14 hours
  • Preschoolers (3โ€“5 years): about 10โ€“13 hours
  • School age (6โ€“13 years): about 9โ€“11 hours
  • Teenagers (14โ€“17 years): about 8โ€“10 hours

Tips for an easier bedtime

  • Keep a consistent routine โ€” same steps, same times, every night.
  • Dim lights and switch off screens about an hour before bed.
  • A calm wind-down (bath, story, cuddle) signals the body it's time to sleep.
