Body Fat Calculator

Estimate your body fat percentage using the U.S. Navy circumference method โ€” just a tape measure, no special equipment.

How to measure

  • Neck: just below the larynx (Adam's apple), tape sloping slightly downward to the front.
  • Waist: at the narrowest point, usually just above the belly button.
  • Hip (women only): at the widest point around the hips/buttocks.

Keep the tape snug but not compressing the skin, and measure at the end of a normal breath out for consistency.

This is a circumference-based estimate, not a clinical measurement โ€” it can be off by a few percentage points either way. Treat it as a general signal to track over time, not a diagnosis. For an accurate reading or any health concerns, talk to a doctor.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the U.S. Navy body fat method?

It's a reasonably accurate estimate for most people (typically within a few percentage points of more precise methods like DEXA scans), using just a tape measure. It's an estimate, not a medical measurement.

What measurements do I need?

Height, neck circumference, and waist circumference for men. Women also need hip circumference. Measure waist at the narrowest point and neck just below the larynx, for the most accurate result.
