How GST is calculated
Adding GST: Final price = Amount × (1 + GST rate ÷ 100). A ₹1,000 item plus 18% GST = ₹1,180.
Removing GST: If a price already includes GST, the base price = Total ÷ (1 + GST rate ÷ 100). A ₹1,180 GST-inclusive price at 18% has a ₹1,000 base and ₹180 GST.
Common GST slabs in India
- 5% — essential goods and some services
- 12% — standard processed goods
- 18% — most goods and services (most common rate)
- 28% — luxury and sin goods
Slabs and rates are set by the GST Council and can change, and the exact rate depends on the specific goods or services category (HSN/SAC code) — always confirm the current applicable rate for invoicing, filing, or compliance purposes rather than relying on this general reference.
