Why a caffeine cut-off helps

Caffeine has a half-life of about 5โ€“6 hours. That means if you have a coffee at 4pm, roughly half of that caffeine is still in your body around 10pm. It works by blocking adenosine โ€” the natural chemical that makes you feel sleepy โ€” so even if you manage to fall asleep, caffeine can quietly reduce your deep sleep.

Giving yourself a cut-off time lets the caffeine wear off before bed, so you fall asleep faster and sleep more deeply.

Caffeine hides in more than coffee

  • Tea (black and green) contains caffeine too.
  • Energy drinks and cola are common evening culprits.
  • Dark chocolate and some pain relievers contain small amounts.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours before bed should I stop caffeine?

A common guideline is at least 8 hours. Caffeineโ€™s half-life is roughly 5โ€“6 hours, so half can still be in your body many hours later.

Does everyone react to caffeine the same way?

No. Genetics, age, and tolerance change how fast you clear caffeine โ€” thatโ€™s why this tool lets you pick your sensitivity.

Is this medical advice?

No, itโ€™s a general guide. If caffeine or sleep is affecting your health, please talk to a doctor.
